The eighteenth volume of the Historical Figures series, jointly produced by the Khumuun Khorvoo Society and Nepko, has reached readers. The series seeks to research Mongolia’s state and history, clarify historical realities and introduce the contributions, lives, wisdom and foresight of notable Mongolians to present and future generations. This volume presents the life of Dashdorj Dembereltseren, Honoured Lawyer of Mongolia and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and was launched today, 22 February 2024.
His spouse, children, classmates, colleagues and fellow community members attended the launch, sharing memories and welcoming the new book. Authors A. Amarjargal and D. Mungundalai recorded his life in this volume.
Dembereltseren led the Supreme Court during a critical period. His biography spans two state systems with contrasting principles and the peaceful, considered transition between them. His career peaked during the final years of the Mongolian People’s Republic’s legal system and the early years of democratic Mongolia, placing him among those who shaped, designed and implemented this complex transition.
In his foreword, editor, Honoured Cultural Worker, writer and columnist B. Tsenddoo explains that Dembereltseren’s life must be understood against the development of Mongolian law—from steppe legal traditions, through Mongolian socialism, to the emergence of a democratic constitutional state. The book is both a personal and professional biography and an accessible history of Mongolian law and the introduction of principles associated with the modern legal order.
The late Honoured Lawyer D. Dembereltseren served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Constitutional Court, a member of Parliament and CITI University’s first Chair of the Board of Trustees. The University’s School of Law now bears his name and contributes to educating legal and judicial professionals.
