An interview with N. Temuulen, a second-year student at CITI University’s School of Law.

— Congratulations on receiving the annual Dembereltseren Foundation scholarship, covering 100 per cent of tuition. The foundation commemorates the late Dashdorj Dembereltseren, Honoured Lawyer of Mongolia, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, first Chair of the Judicial General Council, Constitutional Court member and Chair of CITI University’s Governing Board.

— Thank you. I am pleased that my efforts have been recognised. Since entering university, I have never missed a class or arrived late. I enjoy my studies and participate actively. This scholarship is an important opportunity and source of support.

— What do you think contributed to the award?

— My effort, study time and participation probably mattered. I try to participate in classes and other activities and learn from others. The scholarship encourages me to pursue my goal of becoming a capable lawyer who contributes to society.

— How did you choose CITI University?

— In Grade 10, I wanted to join the Film and Drama programme at CITI University’s School of Arts, but after discussing it with my parents, I enrolled in Law. I believed a legal career could help bring meaningful social change. A doctor treats illness, while a lawyer can help address society’s problems. I chose Law because I wanted to advance justice.

— What do you think of the learning environment and lecturers?

— The environment is comfortable for study. Our lecturers are professional and teach to a high standard. I can focus on my classes and am learning a great deal. I also participate actively in the student association.

— What advice do your lecturers give you?

— They tell us we have chosen a worthwhile profession and that more people with legal knowledge can help society develop. They encourage us to read widely and continually broaden our understanding. They seek to teach knowledge and skills useful both professionally and in everyday life, together with good conduct. They also emphasise defending a reasoned position, fairness and responsibility.

— What is your favourite subject?

— Criminal Law. I see it as important for my professional future and plan to specialise in it. After observing a first-instance court hearing, I felt proud of my chosen profession. I regard criminal law as one means of advancing justice.

— What would you say to prospective Law students?

— I would encourage them to apply without hesitation. Law has an important role in society, establishing justice and protecting everyone’s rights.
